This article focuses on the novel La Mystérieuse affaire de l’impasse Zaafarânî by Gamal Ghitany and its French translation by Khaled Osman. This fictional work is distinguished by its objective and documentary aspect: the author has created a small world, Zaafarani Alley, to observe its residents who live in a conflictual environment. In addition, there are many sources of ambiguity: enallage, polysemy, and near-synonymy. Ambiguity occurs when a word in one language can be interpreted then translated in different ways. This paper aims to discuss the concept of ambiguity and its impact on translation strategies and the decisions taken by the translator. The second part is an analysis of specific examples of the source-text and its translation, based on Antoine Berman’s methodology. This article sheds light on the complexity of the translation process when the ambiguity occurs. This article is based on Antoine Berman's methodology suggested in his book La traduction et la lettre ou l’Auberge du lointain.
